Better late than never?

Should have posted this- along with several things I plan on updating the blog with soon- months ago. It's been pretty busy around here for a while now, and I've neglected the blog. I try to update my website fairly regularly though, so if you've visited that recently you'll likely have seen some of that work already. Anyway, I received my copy of the American Illustration Annual #36 several months ago. It's a beautiful book, and this year the design is such that you can disassemble it to take sheets out, and rearrange as you please. My piece for an L.A. Times' story on recent film releases was included:

AI-36

I was given word last week that two illustrations of mine will be in the American Illustration 36 show.
My piece "Emergency" from my Jesus' Son series was chosen to appear online in the AI-AP Archive:

And a piece I did for the Los Angeles Times on nonlinear storytelling in recent films was selected to be published in the annual hardcover book:

I'm very excited to have something in the show, and looking forward to seeing this year's book! Thank you to AI and the jury members!

Selected for your pleasure: AI 34

I found out last Friday that a piece I had submitted to the American Illustration show was selected for publication in the book! My mock book cover for Chuck Palahniuk's Choke will be published in the 34th American Illustration annual.

 The last time I submitted, two pieces from my Loteria series were accepted into the permanent online collection, but this will be my first time appearing in the book. I feel extremely lucky and honored to be recognized by American illustration. There were only 376 images selected to be published in the book, out of 9,175 pieces submitted to the competition. Can't wait to see all the great work that made it in!

Numbers 684 and 685

I received an email the other day notifying me that the slideshow for the American Illustration Show winners is online. You can see the slideshow here. The list is in alphabetical order, so to see my two pieces (numbers 684 and 685) you can scroll through for a good ten minutes, or you can take a shortcut here. According to the email, the slideshow will be up "until November with the launch of the AI32 book and The Archive." There's plenty of great stuff to look at, so enjoy!

The Chosen One

I was notified last week that two pieces I had submitted were chosen for the American Illustration 32 show. I submitted my three Loteria illustrations, and two (El Tigre and El Puerco) were chosen. Some of you may remember from an earlier post that they were published last year in Migrate Magazine, the publication of the Loerie Awards in South Africa. Here are the pieces:

For those that are unfamiliar with the way the American Illustration shows work, there are two ways to be accepted: chosen and selected. Chosen pieces are displayed in the permanent collection online, and selected pieces are published in the annual book. It's a great honor to be a part of this competition. According to the email, there were 8,742 submissions and only 401 professional images were accepted. Looking forward to seeing all the work that made it in!
